  About TOEFL

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is used in college and university settings. Scores on the test are required by more than 4,300 two- and four-year colleges and universities, professional schools, and sponsoring institutions.

The test is offered on computer throughout most regions of the world. In areas where access to computer-based testing is limited, a supplemental paper-and-pencil version of the test is administered.

In the People's Republic of China, only the paper-and-pencil version of the TOEFL test is administered. If you plan to take TOEFL in the PRC, you must obtain a bulletin and the testing locations and dates from the CIECB.

  TOEFL Testing Program

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL?) evaluates the English proficiency of individuals whose native language is not English. Most people who take the TOEFL test are planning to study at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. TOEFL is also used by institutions in other countries where English is the language of instruction. In addition, many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency. TOEFL is administered under the direction of Educational Testing Service (ETS).

The Paper-Based TOEFL test is given on six dates in 2003-04: August 23, October 18, November 15, 2002, January 17, March 12, and May 15, 2003.

There are two ways to register:

  1. Online registration
  2. Mail registration: To register, you must obtain an Information Bulletin containing a     registration form and information about the test.

When you go to the test center you will be required to have identification with you. The admission ticket mailed to you before the day of the test will tell you what type of identification you will need. The primary form of identification is a valid passport. Expired or photocopied passports are not acceptable.

Before the day of the test, you will be sent a photo file record attached to your admission ticket. You must sign it and attach a recent photograph of yourself. The photograph must show you as you will look on the day of the test.

TOEFL Test Sections and Practice Questions

The TOEFL test is composed entirely of multiple-choice questions with four possible answers per question. There are three sections in the test, each measuring a critical skill in the use of English.

You may wish to read How to Mark Your TOEFL Answer Sheet before you begin. Using practice answer sheets will help you become familiar with the TOEFL answer sheet formats.

Section 1 - Listening Comprehension/Practice Questions

Section 2 - Structure and Written Expression/Practice Questions

Section 3 - Reading Comprehension/Practice Questions

Each section of the test has a time limit. The test center supervisor will tell you when to start and stop each section. The number of test questions may vary from one test administration to another, but there will never be fewer than 140 questions. Total testing time is less than three hours.
